Fire crews responded to the A-1 Compaction facility at 325 Yonkers Ave. in Yonkers shortly before 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, where the fire sent smoke soaring through the windy conditions.

Yonkers Deputy Fire Chief Daniel Flynn said that upon arrival, firefighters found a heavy volume of fire that had been started in a garbage fire.

The Yonkers Police Department temporarily closed down Yonkers Avenue in both directions. In total, 13 fire companies, including approximately 60 firefighters responded to the blaze. As of noon on Tuesday, the fire had not been completely extinguished, Flynn said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and remains under investigation. No injuries were initially reported.
